Roxby Downs

Diocese of Willochra

Roxby Downs is a mining town in South Australia, about 560 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. It has a permanent population of around 4500 who come from around 40 different nations. The population is very young – the average age of residents is 29 – and almost 1000 fly-in fly-out (FIFO) or drive-in drive-out workers can be in town depending on shifts at the mine. The town was purpose-built for Olympic Dam, a mine that produces copper, uranium, gold and silver, which is located 16 kilometres to the north of the town.
