Kristan Slack announced to his church community yesterday that he has accepted the role of Rector of the Anglican Church of the Ascension in Alice Springs. In his new role Kristan will look after the church in Alice, the parish in Tennant Creek and have oversight for Yulara.
Kristan, Kathryn, Levi, Ezekiel, Jeremiah & Elianah plan to finish in Katherine in mid-December, spend some time in Sydney over the Christmas holiday period and move to Alice Springs in time to start the 2021 school year.
“We are really sad about leaving the BCA family especially the fellowship that exists between Field Staff and supporters,” says Kristan. “We had no intention of leaving at this point and had planned to stay at least another two years, but the Bishop suggested Alice to us and we knew we had to seriously look at the opportunity.”
The congregation in Alice Springs is a multicultural one and said to be about 75–80 people strong each Sunday. Kristan will have the backing of a team, with a number of clergy in the church who work in chaplaincy roles in the town. In Alice Springs, Kristan will build on the previous rector’s work enhancing the skills and gifts of those already serving in the church and placing a strong emphasis on God’s word.
“During our four years in Katherine I have seen so many people come alive at hearing God’s word and start looking forward to coming to church,” says Kristan. “I pray that this will be the same in Alice Springs where many of the 25,000 strong population are positively disposed to the Christian message.”
Please join with me in thanking the Slack family for their ministry to the people of Katherine and wishing them all the best as they make plans to depart later this year.
