Newman Parish |
| Newman is the main town in the Shire of the East Pilbara 1200km north of Perth. The unchanging beauty
of the bush, pools & gorges can be contrasted to the events within the town. The town population has reached 5,000
and is still growing; and comprises many people on very high incomes, and a growing Aboriginal population. The town is
still undergoing a significant growth phase to meet the growth in iron ore markets in Asia. Newman is primarily a town that houses and serves the BHP Billiton workers from the Mt Whaleback mine. This is the largest open cut mine in the Southern Hemisphere. It services BHP Billiton's iron ore mining operations in the region. Big: That is the one word that describes everything about Newman. We have big trucks, big mines, big money, big boots, big temperatures, big spaces, big drinkers, big gamblers, big risk-takers, big marriage problems, big personal problems, big spiritual problems, big parish (7000+ and only one full time minister), big opportunities, big God. BCA has a vital role in supporting continuing ministry in the town. Matthew and Naomi came to Newman from the beachside comfort of the Central Coast of NSW early in 2006 . They experienced the culture shock of adjusting to an outback mining town, about as far away from Sydney as you can get, without leaving the Continent. Talk about getting a taste of life. God is good! One of the exciting things about trusting God is you never know where you will end up! They are here to minister to the people of Newman, who are also a long way from friends and family.
