Karratha is the residential, education and service centre for the West Pilbara region, and Dampier is a major port for the export of iron ore, salt and natural gas. Located about 850 kilometres south-west of Broome, 25 per cent of the people in Karratha work in the resources sector. As a result, a culture of extreme materialism exists in the town. The local economy is supported by tourists, who visit during the cooler months.
Les and Jenny Gaulton serve at Karratha Anglican Community Church. Their ministry responsibilities include conducting Bible studies, a Moore College PTC course and events such as men’s breakfasts, Introducing God courses and women’s dessert nights.
Although the church has around 60 members, a 48 per cent annual turnover rate in the parish means numbers fluctuate dramatically.
The Gaultons' September Prayer Points
Thank God for the start of a new street chaplaincy program in Karratha run by the combined churches. Pray for the Diocesan Fellow Workers’ Conference in Geraldton at the end of the month.
