Somerset Project
Somerset is a coastal village in the north-west of Tasmania about a 10 minute drive from the semi-industrial, semi-rural city of Burnie. About 3,000 people live in Somerset where the main industries are mining and cropping. Many of the residents are de-churched people.
Rev Will and Mrs Gillian Briggs
Will Briggs was looking for a new place to serve God following a curacy position at Burnie. A team was being formed to connect with families and young adults and he and his family joined what became the core of a church-plant in nearby Somerset. Beginning with 10-or-so people, the church began to grow and attract people who hadn’t been part of a church in a number of years. The growth continues today. Finding a regular building has proven a great challenge – during summer they meet outdoors.
