Port Hedland
Many people move to Port Hedland with a plan. It may be a two year plan or a five year plan, but it is rarely long-term. Most intend to stay for a while, make some money and move back to ‘civilisation’. As a result, the population of around 15,000 in Port and South Hedland is forever expanding and contracting. The port serves to export iron ore from BHP Billiton, as well as salt, manganese and livestock. It is the "town of big ships" where carriers of 220,000 tonnes are a common sight.
Rev Philip and Mrs Elke Knight
After nine years of ministry in Sydney, Philip and Elke Knight moved to Port Hedland to assist Bill and Jocelyn Ross. In 2009 Philip assumed the position as Senior Minister, and Bill and Jocelyn focused on other ministry commitments. The church family changes every two years or so with only a handful staying longing than four years. In a town where the vast majority of people only come to earn lots of money and then return home, the gospel message needs to be proclaimed loud and clear. The church needs wisdom as they proclaim this message throughout the community.
