Leigh Creek Parish
Leigh Creek’s population has dropped from 4000 to 400 over the last 10 years. Many of those in the area aren’t permanent residents. Miners fly in and out while tourists simply visit for a short time. This presents some challenges for relationship building and steady ministry.
Rev Arthur and Mrs Jane Tanner
Two congregations meet within the Tanners’ pastoral area. One is at Leigh Creek, the other is at Blinman. Arthur uses CDs for corporate singing and Powerpoint displays during the services. Often he leads the congregation and preaches, though services are sometimes run by members. In addition Arthur visits stations when called upon and is a chaplain to the police and their families.
Whilst the mining boom is bringing more people into the area, it does not equate to bigger towns. The logistics of the work force are that the companies fly in workers and then fly them out on a roster basis. Tourism is increasing and next to mining is the second most important industry. Stations are changing with more closing down in bad times and less stock in the region.
