Launceston

About 100,000 people live in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston. It is a place with many churches and schools and is one of Australia’s oldest cities home to a range of heritage listed buildings. Forestry is a major industry in the Launceston region.

David and Julie Rogers-Smith and their children live in Launceston; a city which, according to David, feels similar to a big country town such as Tamworth. Here David, who was previously on faculty at the Sydney Missionary Bible College, has two roles. On the one hand he is an Enabler offering training and support to non-stipendiary church leaders in the Riverlinks parish. On the other hand he takes care of ministry development across the entire Diocese. The latter role sees him coordinate a certificate in theology and ministry. Julie helps with youth ministry and runs a Mainly Music program for preschoolers and their parents.

Rev Andy and Mrs Liz Goodacre

Rev Andy and Mrs Liz Goodacre

Andy, Liz and their daughter Olivia are based in Launceston, where Andy heads up the Imagine Project North – part of the Diocese of Tasmania’s exciting experiment pioneering ‘Fresh Expressions’ of church. Andy’s main focus is developing missional communities, where uni students and others can grow as Disciples of Christ and develop vision and skills for being pioneering missionaries and leaders themselves into the future. Over the years, Andy has spent time as an on-campus ministry worker, encouraging students in the same way he had himself been encouraged and appreciated in his student days. He was ordained in 2004 and started work in Launceston in April 2010.

Rev Irfon and Mrs Barbara Griffiths

Irfon and Barbara Griffiths serve at three church centres within the Parish of St Leonards in Launceston. The centres are Patersonia, Ravenswood, and St Leonards. During their time at the church they have seen many regular members connect more closely with one another and some non-Christians connect with the church for the first time.
