Karratha / Dampier Parish

Twenty five percent of people in Karratha work directly in the resources industries of iron ore, salt or natural gas. As a result real estate in the town is incredibly high and a culture of extreme materialism is prevalent. Those who work in other industries including education, retail and service, struggle with the enormous costs of living. Karratha is both coastal and arid, and is bolstered by tourism in the cooler months.

Personal evangelism is the best way to grow the church in Karratha according to Les Gaulton. Although his church has around 60 members, a forty eight percent annual turnover rate in the parish means numbers fluctuate dramatically. With his wife Jenny, Les takes care of the coastal resource centres of Karratha and Dampier. Their ministry responsibilities include Bible studies, a Moore College PTC course and events such as men’s breakfasts, Introducing God courses, and women’s dessert nights.
