Coober Pedy Parish

Depending on the time of year, temperatures in Coober Pedy can plunge to 2 degrees Celsius or soar to 55. Aside from making it hard to know what kind of clothing to wear, the fluctuating temperatures have driven two thirds of locals underground. By living in ‘houses’ dug into the earth, a good proportion of locals enjoy temperatures between 23 and 27 degrees all year round. The opal mining town of about 3000 people has a busy social and community life. The local church averages about 30 people but increases during tourist season.

Rev Peter and Mrs Joy Palmer

Rev Peter and Mrs Joy Palmer

How does one forge relationships in the community when most people live underground? That’s the question Peter Palmer had to grapple with when he took up ministry in Coober Pedy at the end of 2007. His answer was to get amongst locals in environments such as the golf club, the RSL and an Oz-Minerals mine just out of town. By simply showing up and talking to people Peter has become known around town as “Rev”. His wife, Joy, teaches as a relief teacher in the local school, and his two adult children are working in other parts of Australia. He loves chatting to locals and has seen many gospel opportunities come from friendly conversations.
