Broken Hill

Located in north western NSW about 40 km from the South Australian border, Broken Hill has a population of 20,000 people. Around 1000 of those are Indigenous; a figure that continues to grow. On the other hand, the non-Indigenous population is in decline largely due to retrenchment and unemployment. Some 300,000 tourists stream through the desert community each year providing growth for local business and making the area attractive to investors.

There are a number of churches in Broken Hill, but the Far West Indigenous Ministries is the only one that specifically caters to the Indigenous population. Neville Naden and his wife Kathryn moved to Broken Hill at the beginning of 2007. Prior to that, they had ministered among indigenous people at Mount Druitt in Western Sydney. The ministry among the Barkingee people of Broken Hill is slowly gaining momentum. So far it has included door-to-door visitation and the launching of a youth group which incorporates a youth Bible study and a Sunday night service. Neville has also helped build a community garden which will provide fresh fruit and vegetables for needy families, help raise funds for the youth ministry and support the ongoing use of the garden.
