Blackwater
Blackwater is a purpose built mining town with around 7500 residents. Located almost 200 kilometres west of Rockhampton the town services a number of mines in the area. With two primary schools and a high school in town, Blackwater is home to a number of young families. When miners get time off they regularly leave Blackwater to spend time at the coast. It is not uncommon for good friends in Blackwater to have no contact for a couple of months.
Capts Stuart and Katherine Haynes
When Stuart and Katherine Haynes first arrived in Blackwater they spent some time trying to understand the needs of the town. They eventually started Healthy Soul Ministries helping people to lead healthy physical and spiritual lives. Soul Kids uses multimedia to engage around 30 primary aged children with the scriptures; Soul Fitness is for women and incorporates exercise classes and a discussion time; and Soul Men is a way to connect with local men and their families through barbecues and various activities. Stuart says the ministries are drawing back locals who’ve been disconnected from church.
