Broome Parish

Welcome ~ If you are thinking of coming to Broome you are welcome to come and join us at one of our services or events during the week.

The Anglican Church in Broome has celebrated 100 years of existence in 2003. The town continues to grow and the vision under the Lord is to see a viable church built in which the Lord is glorified. Pray to this end.

As a community of people we are seeking to learn from God’s Word , The Bible what it means to know and follow Jesus. Our fellowship is friendly and there is ample opportunity to find acceptance and encouragement in our church as well as the opportunity to learn more about Jesus, grow in your faith and serve Him.

The risen and living Jesus is the centre of our community. Jesus himself says “I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father but by me.” John 14:6. We are encouraged by the fact that people in our church are coming to know and grow in the love of Jesus revealed in His powerful death on the Cross. Jesus brings forgiveness from sins, healing and freedom from guilt and gives people the opportunity for a fresh start in life.

Services ~ Each week (except January) there are 3 services operating. The 8am service operates at the Anglican Church at 44 Hammersley St and it is opposite the library. Our second service which is called Cable Beach Anglican Church is at 10am and has a Sunday School which caters for children. From February 2000 it has operated out of Roebuck Estate School. The third service is called "Sunday@six" and takes the form of a café church (3 weeks of the week), and once a month in the form of a youth service. For more exact details please send us an e-mail.

In addition during the school term The JAFFA Club runs each Friday at the church centre and is geared for 5 – 10 year olds. The club is open to any interested child ! Parents are welcome to stay or drop off their children. The afternoon commences at 3:30 and finishes at 5pm and includes a Bible story, refreshments, games and a craft or colouring in activity. There is also small youth group. Please contact for more details.

Bible studies operate during the day and evening during school term. The Bible study cell groups are an important part of our church life as they increase our understanding of our faith and build community amongst our members.

Minister

We give thanks that Lachlan and Bec Edwards have been appointed by the Bishop as Assistant in Broome, beginning in 2006 after they complete their final studies at Trinity College, Perth.

Co-Workers

In 2002 Geoff and Anne Thompson moved from Sydney to Broome to be involved in Gospel outreach. Geoff served as the catechist with a focus on youth work. Anne taught scripture, Sunday school music, and women's ministries. They were supported by the generosity of God's people who shared the vision for Broome. Geoff and Anne finished in Broome in 2005.

Broome Background ~ Broome is a renowned pearling and tourism centre. During May to September the population increases from 12,000 to 30,000 as people come to enjoy the pleasant weather and beautiful beaches. The church has had a strong ministry to the many tourists who come to town and people often remark that they feel welcome at our church. The church will continue to serve the tourists who come to town as well as investing significant time and energy into the local population.

Broome is a town of 12,000 people projected to grow to 16,000 by 2006. The vision is under God to build a viable church.

There is more to Broome than tourism. It is a friendly and interesting community which has become a home to many people. The lifestyle of Broome gives great opportunities for people to enjoy the beautiful scenery. In addition Broome has an important and interesting multicultural history dating from the pearling days when many Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and European people joined the Aboriginal people of the area to seek fortune in pearls.

What is most important in Broome ? The pearling industry has become a theme in Broome. In Matthew 13 Jesus spoke of a merchant who while shopping came across a priceless pearl and seeing its great value he sold all he had to buy it. In Broome they are communicating that Jesus is like that priceless pearl. He is worth giving up control of our lives so that he truly becomes the centre of our lives. As we point people to Jesus we are communicating that in finding Jesus there is great joy because He offers us what is most important in life – forgiveness of sins and peace with God which results in a close relationship with the living God. We seek to put before people the priceless death of Christ which is the pearl of great price in the Christian life.

Helping people see the great value of Christ is hard work – please pray for us as we proclaim the pearl of great price – Jesus himself. Pray that the Lord will send us labourers for the harvest. People who are willing to get jobs in Broome and help with the task of planting a new church and seeing people won for Christ. Pray for us as we look for those from various backgrounds whom Jesus is calling to himself so they will know the joy of being friends with the most valuable and important friend in their life – Jesus Christ.

Matthew 13:45-46 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Winter in Australia means peak tourist time in Broome. So it is wall to wall people, frayed tempers, nowhere to park, long queues at the supermarket, ages waiting at intersections, nowhere to sit at church but, hopefully, lots of opportunities through “Campers for Christ” to share the gospel. For those people who have come for a break may they meet the one who died for them, who loves them and who can change their lives in ways they never thought possible.
