| Watching the television or listening to the radio in Sydney, it would seem that with
all of the recent rain here in New South Wales and in Queensland that the drought that has affected our land for so
many years has come to an end. As I visit some of the Parishes in Western New South Wales that BCA are helping
with the Religious Education Grants it is clear that a number of communities are still struggling. Around the
Riverina water restrictions are still in force and the rain has been sorely lacking. Griffith was hit in early April
with a dust storm rather than rain and much of the farm land surrounding it is red and dry. Driving through the
south west plains around West Wyalong and Temora, the grasshoppers were thick through the air, plastering the car.
Even where the rain has fallen close to the coast, there is still a great need. The rains we’ve been seeing need to
extend further inland and continue regularly for some years to give many farmers and pastoralists a fighting chance
in the long term. There is much that we have to be thankful for in the recent rains and the relief they bring and
yet we still need to pray for many parts of our nation where the lack of rain continues to hurt communities and
parishes along with a number of other issues this Real Australian is highlighting in a climate of change.
