April Bottom
Scholarship
2005
Brett Bonselaar has been awarded the inaugural April Bottom Scholarship for 2005. The
Scholarship is a legacy from the late April Bottom, awarded annually, to one student from the Anglican Parish
of the West Darling to assist with secondary or tertiary education outside the parish.
April was a regular member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Menindee – now part of the Anglican Parish of West
Darling. Before she lost her long and courageous battle with cancer in 2003, April and her husband, David, ran
Wirryilka Station for many years and experienced first hand the difficulties of having their children
educated.
April had a deep respect for the work of the BCA and particularly its commitment to provide ministry to people
in remote parts of Australia. At her request, BCA will continue to administer the Scholarship.
As the first recipient of the Scholarship, Brett’s award will assist with boarding and education fees as he
enters Year 10 at Sacred Heart College, Adelaide. Brett has made a successful transition from Broken Hill
School of the Air in 2002 and since then has achieved a number of academic awards. He has also become involved
as a volunteer to raise funds for the Red Cross and Salvation Army appeals.
Whilst now very much part of the boarding school community, Brett misses his home and family on their property
“Windalle”. Drought and recent hard times have forced many families off their properties, but Brett is very
keen to remain on the land. He hopes to continue his studies to tertiary level and learn further skills, which
he can put into practice on Windalle.
Congratulations Brett!
